We are making history...

This course is part of a unique long term project partnering between the Faculty of Arts' INitiative for Student Teaching and Research in Chinese Canadian studies (INSTRCC) and the UBC Learning Exchange. Growing out of the student-based learning and community research models developed over the last five years in History 483 and History 485, this class is the beginning of a commitment at UBC to foster new modes of learning where students work in groups to create new forms of knowledge rather than passively receiving what is already known. These new forms of knowledge also grow from interactions and exchanges with the Asian Canadian communities of Vancouver and Canada. The first stage of this long term initiative focuses on Chinese Canadian history within the context of Pacific Canada--a perspective on our past, present, and future that emphasize the interactions between trans-Pacific migrants, trans-Atlantic migrants, and the First Nations peoples upon whose land we live. Instructions on Posting Assignment #1 Interview Project

For examples of interview projects from the last time this course was taught, go to http://history483.blogspot.com/

In order to post the link to your interview project, you can do the following:

1. Create your own website at blogger.com or some other hosting site. Once your website is done, write an email message with your name as the Title of the message, and the following message:

Email this message to henrysnyu.yu485@blogger.com. Wait 3-4 minutes. Your message should then be posted at http://yu485.blogspot.com

2. If you want to create a post at the http://yu485.blogspot.com site yourself, email me and I will give you administrative access to the website and you can design your own post at the website.

3. If you have finished your html site yourself and do not wish to mount it publicly at another site, email it to me in a zipped folder and I will mount it at this site. If you go this option, please give me at least an extra three days, so email it to me on Friday before it is due.

4. If you have created a video clip, please email it to me directly as per #3 above, or mount it to the http://yu485.blogspot.com site as per #2 above.

5. If you have used Microsoft Word and have embedded photos within the document, go to the "Save As..." options and save it as HTML. A folder will be created with the html index file and accompanying pictures. Zip that folder and send it to me by email three days early.

Evaluation

This class is unique in that there are no exams and tests. Students learn by doing, and they are expected to work in groups. An essential component of the class is learning to work as part of a larger team, and how to divide tasks and integrate them so that each individual's work is towards a common goal. Peer evaluation is an essential element in this work, and we will value those who fulfill their responsibilities to others. However, the end product is the crucial object by which your group's work will be judged.

1st assignment

25% of term grade

Peer Evaluation

10% for quality of your evaluations of others

15% for quality of others' evaluations of you

Final Project

15% for evaluation of whole class

35% for community and instructor evaluation

Optional Assignment #2 - Restaurant Group Exercise Weeks 5-8-- 25% (Final Project for those who do this exercise will be 25% of course evaluation)

Go into groups of 4-5 students and choose a restaurant somewhere in the Greater Vancouver area. The restaurant can be of any kind, but preferably should be one that is run by migrants to Vancouver. You will work together in a coordinated way to examine the restaurant from a multiple number of perspectives. For instance, some of you might try to arrange an interview with the owners or operators/managers or chefs, perhaps even do an oral history. You could all take turns going to the restaurants at different times on different days to see what kinds of customers eat there and why. Some of you might examine the menu and find out how it was created--did they copy other similar restaurants in the city? Are they bringing in dishes from another place outside Canada? Some of you should examine the history of the location. Were there other restaurants there before? What were they like? What is the history of that locale or the surrounding block? This will entail some historical detective work, involving city records. In the end, each of you will write up the work that you did as individuals, but the whole group's findings need to be coordinated with each other so that it comes together as a team project. Ideally, you will present the material on a website mounted on the class website.

Final Project Peer Evaluation

The due date for final projects is Wednesday, December 16. It is also the due date for your peer evaluations.

When you hand in your final projects, make sure that all proper documentation (release forms, waivers, etc.) are included in the package, and full citations for photographs and music used. The forms can be downloaded from the links list above. Also, make sure that each member of your group is named in a main list of group members that accompanies your project.

For peer evaluations, your group can choose one of two methods:

A. Each member of your group, on or before Wednesday, Dec. 16, will email to me and cc'ing Rosanne Sia, a confidential evaluation of each of your group members work in the group. You may address what you perceive to be their important contributions, their work habits, their ability to work with others, the skills and abilities they brought to the project, as well as other comments that you feel are pertinent. We will evaluate the confidential evaluations of your group members and apportion to each member of the group a fair grade created from our assessment of the individual comments. We will also email to you sometime in late December a personal evaluation based upon a synopsis of the range of comments made by your peers. This personal evaluation is intended solely for your own information and private use, and will not be shared with anyone else.

B. Your group may also choose to meet and create collectively what you believe is a fair apportioning of credit for contribution to the project. The process of discussing this apportioning should be respectful and honest, and comments made should be tempered. As the group decides whether some members deserve special consideration for doing more or less work, you will then use the following numerical method to weigh the relative contributions of group members. Count the total number of group members (for instance, you have six in your group), then multiply that number by 10 (for instance 6 x 10 = 60). You will then re-apportion this total number of points among individual group members to indicate what you see as a fair assessment of their contribution to the group's work. Email this list of names and appropriate numbers to me and to Rosanne Sia. Remember that the numbers must add up to the total that you created by multiplying the number of group members by 10.
